Welcome to Oravais. Today is

WELCOME
Publiced by the municipalityoffice 02-12-2008

The municipality of Oravais is situated very beautifully right by the sea. Oravais is one of the very few places where you can see the sea while driving along Highway no. 8 on Finland's west coast. Oravais is a rural district, and the population is approximately 2,184. The majority of our residents speak Swedish as their mother tongue. A minority of 11% speak Finnish. There is also a small minority of 2,8% that speak other languages. Our international atmosphere is remarkable. Nearly 300 refugees from different countries live at our refugee centre.

Agriculture and forestry account for 29% of our economic base. Industry with 20%, services with 48%, and nonclassified industries with 3% make up the balance of our economy.

The industrial tradtions are important to us. One of Finland's first iron works was founded here in 1703. The Kimo Iron works produced bar iron, anchors, pots, and tools for more than two hundred years. During those years walloon smiths from Sweden found their way to Finland and to the Kimo Iron Works. Today the handicraft traditions of the iron works have been revived, thanks to an association arranging blacksmith courses, and a yearly forging festival. You can find their Museum and Gallery by the Kimo River.

Another historical event of importance to us is the battle of Oravais. On the 14th of September 1808, Swedish and Russian troops met on the battlefield of Oravais. The Russians won, and as a result Finland became a grand duchy of Russia. Our Historical Sociey today presents the progress of the battle, and the living conditions of the soldiers, at the Fanrik Stal Centre close to the battlefield. During the summer you can also see the regiment of Ostrobothnia, dressed in traditional clothes, drilling on the battlefield.

Development of historical tourism in Oravais has its origin in these two important events. During the last ten years we have made great efforts towards encouraging tourism, and we have been getting more visitors. Tourism is slowly turning into a new source of income, replacing the loss of more traditional sources like farming. Cultural life is very rich in Oravais. Local associations offer a wide range of leisure-time activities both for children and adults. As for municipal services, we have four schools, two day-care centres, and a home for the elderly. Our services are of a high quality. Some services, like health care, and some education, is arranged in cooperation with neighboring municipalities.
